"After the large and successful athletics meetings in the past, especially the European Championships in Athletics, we are very glad to be able to offer to athletics fans in Munich and guests of the Olympic Park another high-class event on June 23rd and 24th 2007." says Wilfrid Spronk, General Manager of the Olympiapark München GmbH.
In fact, the Olympic Stadium has proved to be an ideal venue with enthusiastic and competent spectators, be it for the SPAR European Cup in 1997, the IAAF Grand Prix Final in 1999 or the Athletics Team Challenge in 2004. Post-Olympic athletics history was crowned however by the European Championships in Athletics 2002. The atmosphere was absolutely overwhelming. The Olympic Stadium, the Park and the entire city were seized with athletics fever. More than 300,000 spectators and Europe’s best athletes celebrated an international top event.
Among the app. 9420 events from the field of sports, culture and economics with over 92 million spectators – including 30 World, 12 European and 90 German Championships, there were however many other athletics highlights which brought unforgettable impressions for both athletes and spectators.
Olympic flair and ideal conditions have always stimulated the world’s best athletes to perform outstanding results. Munich’s Olympic Park stands for three decades of sports, entertainment and recreation – top events, recreational sport, a haven of tranquility, and a magnet of tourism. Besides international and national championships, the chronicle of events lists spectacular concerts with rock, pop and classical music stars, large congresses and exhibitions. On the other side the Park facilities, such as the Olympic Swimming Centre, the Olympic Ice Sport Centre, the Olympic Tower and the Visitors’ Service offer tourist attractions and opportunities for leisure and recreation sports. Until today, more than 71 million visitors from Munich and all parts of the world have used these facilities.
